Privacy Policy

Your privacy when visiting outdoormap.gl and downloading our maps.

1. Who we are and what this policy covers

Outdoormap Greenland is a volunteer project operated by Team Outdoormap in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. “We” and “us” mean the team responsible for outdoormap.gl. We decide how personal information is used for this website and our correspondence with you. For privacy questions or requests, email team@outdoormap.gl.

This policy covers the public website, requests to download maps from our servers, and communications you send to us. You do not need an account to browse the website or download a map.

The community at outdoormapgl.flarum.cloud has a separate privacy policy. Its policy covers forum accounts, posts, messages, cookies and moderation. Read the policy provided on the community site before registering or posting. This website's browser settings do not control the forum's cookies or privacy choices. A separate policy does not remove any responsibilities we may have as forum administrators.

2. Information used and why

  • Visits and downloads. Delivering a page or map requires processing your IP address and request details. Hosting systems may log the requested page or file, time, response status, browser or app information and referring page, if supplied. Technical information helps deliver files, investigate faults and prevent abuse. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating a reliable and secure public map service (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
  • Correspondence. If you email us, we receive your email address, name if supplied, message, attachments and email metadata. The website's email link opens your email app; the website does not collect your message through a contact form. We use correspondence to answer enquiries, investigate map issues and manage the project. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Providing information is voluntary; without sufficient details or a reply address we may be unable to answer. Please avoid sending sensitive information or unnecessary personal details about other people.
  • Settings. Browser storage remembers display choices as described below.
  • Legal matters. We may process information to meet a specific legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c) GDPR), or where necessary for our legitimate interest in establishing, exercising or defending legal claims.

The website does not request your device's GPS location, record your movements or receive a live location feed from your offline map app. A regional download can reveal which area interests you, and an IP address can indicate an approximate location. Cartograph and other apps handle their own permissions and data under their own privacy policies.

The current website configuration does not enable advertising, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager or newsletter subscriptions. We do not use website information for advertising profiles or automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects. We do not sell your personal information or share it for cross-site targeted advertising.

3. Cookies and browser storage

The current website code does not set cookies. It uses browser storage for display settings: these values stay in your browser and are not automatically sent with page requests. Rules on cookies and similar technologies also cover browser storage.

  • theme — local storage. Remembers your chosen light, dark or system display mode. It is written when you change the setting and has no automatic expiry; it remains until you clear site data or your browser removes it. Without a saved choice, the site follows your device's display preference.
  • color-theme — session storage. The site can read a saved colour palette from its optional palette selector. If used, it lasts for the browser tab's session, subject to browser session restoration. The current navigation does not show that selector.

These settings support display preferences you request. They do not identify you for advertising or track you across websites. Remove them through your browser's site-data settings. Blocking storage does not prevent access to the maps; your display choice may not be remembered.

No tracking integration is currently enabled, so we do not ask for tracking consent. Before adding a feature that requires consent, we will update this notice and provide a choice before it runs, including a way to refuse and withdraw consent. Visiting this site is not consent to tracking.

4. Recipients and external services

Our hosting and infrastructure providers handle information needed to deliver the website and downloads. Our email provider and the team members dealing with your enquiry handle correspondence. We may also disclose information where legally required or necessary to protect legal rights.

Following a community, app-store, video, social-media or other external link takes you to another service, which receives your connection information and applies its own policy. Our fonts and map preview images are served with the website. The current pages do not embed a third-party map or video player.

5. International processing

Where your information is processed depends on the hosting and email providers involved. Contact us for information about their processing locations and, where data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, the safeguards applicable to that transfer and how to obtain a copy. A provider's policy does not replace our own obligations.

6. Retention

We retain correspondence while it is needed to resolve your enquiry and follow up on the issue. Relevant information forming part of an ongoing map correction or project decision may be kept for that work. Information needed for a legal obligation or an actual dispute may be retained for the applicable statutory period or until the matter and related claim periods have ended. Unrelated personal details should not be retained for those purposes.

Technical log and backup retention depends on the hosting or email service involved and its configured deletion cycle. Contact us for retention details applicable to your request. Browser settings have the lifetimes described above. Clearing your browser does not delete server logs or correspondence; you can request their deletion separately.

7. Your rights

Under the GDPR, subject to its conditions and exceptions, you can request access, correction, deletion or restriction of your personal information. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests on grounds relating to your particular situation. Where processing is based on consent, you can withdraw it without affecting the lawfulness of earlier processing. Portability applies where the legal conditions are met, including automated processing based on consent or a contract.

Send requests to team@outdoormap.gl, describing the information or interaction concerned. We may ask for proportionate information to verify your identity. We respond without undue delay and normally within one month; if the GDPR allows an extension, we will explain it within that first month.

You can complain to the Dutch Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or a competent supervisory authority in the country of your habitual residence, place of work or the alleged infringement. You do not have to contact us first.

8. Changes and contact

We will update this page and its date when our practices change. Where required, we will give an additional notice or request consent before a new use of personal information. For questions, contact team@outdoormap.gl. Our Terms of Service describe use of the website and maps; they do not limit statutory privacy rights.
